“Please don’t engage in socializing during Ramadan” - President Buhari to Muslims


The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari has advised Muslim faithful in the country to shelve large gatherings and socializing as they Ramadan fast begins on Friday, April 24.

He has called for self-discipline as Muslims begins a month-long fast.

However, following the sighting of the moon, Saad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, have announced the commencement of the fast on Thursday.

Meanwhile, with the current coronavirus cases cases rising by the day in the country, president Buhari urged a lowkey month-long fast and the festivity that would follow, just as he did during the just concluded Easter celebrations.

“I congratulate all Muslims as they commence this year’s Ramadan fast which is depicted by self-denial, universal brotherhood, austerity and helping relatives and needy people,” said the president.

“In this Ramadan period, the kind of socializing you are used to now risks spreading the coronavirus,” Buhari cautioned.

Furthermore, he also instruct Muslims to abstain from Ramadan rituals and traditions like group meals and congregational prayers that have been put on hold by Muslim religious authorities all over the globe, as the outbreak enforces shutdowns of whole economies.

Meanwhile, most state governors have suspended religious gatherings in churches, mosques, and clubs, so as to lessen the spread of the virus.

As at the time of filing this, Nigeria has confirmed 981 coronavirus cases, 31 fatalities and 197 recoveries.
