Ace Super Eagles star, Austine Jay Jay Okocha in a new statement has revealed that he regrets not winning the CAF African Footballer of the Year award during his days of playing football.
The former Bolton Wanderers star who won the BBC version of the award two time, was unable to win the CAF honor.
Jay Jay Okocha was widely tipped to have win the award in 1998 following a superlative performance for the Super Eagles at the FIFA World Cup in France, but he lost out surprisingly to Mustapha Hadji of Morocco.
The 46-year-old also came 3rd twice in 2003 and 2004, behind Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon and Didier Drogba of Ivory Coast.
Okocha was quoted by MastercardMEA;
“I thought I did enough to have won it because it wasn’t a fluke that I won the BBC POTY twice in a row and didn’t manage to win the CAF awards, may be it wasn’t meant to be,”
The talented midfielder with the Super Eagles won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and was part of the side that came 2nd in the 2000 edition which was co-hosted by Ghana and Nigeria.
The football legendary was also part of the squad that came third thrice in 2002, 2004 and 2006.
The sensational player in 73 appearances for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, scored 14 goals.
