Barcelona Fc President, Josep Bartomeu Resigns

Josep Bartomeu, the Barcelona Fc president, have resigned as the club’s president with other board members additionally resigning from their positions with immediate effect.

Bartomeu made the decision known at a press conference on Tuesday evening, 27th October, 2020, at the Nou Camp, following a board meeting in Catalonia on Monday, 26th October, after the 3-1 El Clasico thrashing to Real Madrid.

Following Lionel Messi threatened to leave the club this summer, the pressure from the club's allies towards Bartomeu increased.

Lionel Messi would later stay but accused Bartomeu for deceiving him and slammed the club for not having a project.

Bartomeu’s term was reaching to an end in March 2021 but a scold movement was being brought against him by club members on 1st November.

A sum of 16,500 supporters had signed a motion to have Bartomeu removed from his position with a vote due to be held by 154,000 members. Over 66.6% of the vote would have ousted the 57-year-old, reports Sky Sports.

A poor beginning to the season for Barcelona, who lost out to Real by five points at the top of La Liga last season, has forced his hand. Saturday’s thrashing saw them trail their opponents by six points.

And this announcement comes on the night of Barcelona’s Champions League fixture with Juventus in Turin.
