The US has dismissed Okonjo-Iweala as the consensus candidate for appointment as director-general of the Word Trade Organization (WTO).
The US delegate at World Trade Organization, has revealed that Washington will not recognize Okonjo-Iweala as the consensus candidate for appointment as director-general of the organization.
It could be recalled that the Nigerian was slated to be the new Director-General of the World Trade Organization.
In any case, the appointment has now been tossed into questions after United States dismissed the move.
It was found out the former Nigeria’s minister of finance, had won the support from the far most of member states, including the EU, Japan and China, but not the US.
Because of this turn of events, the General Counsel has postponed its announcement of the new Director-General until a further meeting, which is scheduled for November 9th, 2020, after the US presidential races.
In the interim, in a tweet after the head of representatives meeting on Wednesday, 28th October, in Geneva, the WTO expressed that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has the best chance at getting a consensus.
The tweet reads,
“the candidate that had the best chance of attaining a consensus of the membership is Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria. Consultations on the way fwd will start immediately”.
