The Nigeria Federal Government on Thursday, 19th November, 2020, announced that it will regulate social media as part of efforts aimed at curbing fake news.
Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information, who disclosed this at a brief press in Abuja, stated that contrary to reports on the internet, it has no plan to close down the internet or social media.
It revealed that it would only work with stakeholders to regulate social media.
The minister stated that social media was used wrongly to cause mayhem in the aftermath of the #EndSARS movement.
Mohammed disclosed that social media propagated fake news and celebrities used online platforms to incite individuals who wreaked havoc in the wake of the protests.
