Finally Presidency Opens up on Changing Nigeria's name to United African Republic


The presidency is setting the record straight amid reports that the Nigerian government made a request for the country's name to be changed, the personal assistant to the president on new media, Bashir Ahmad, on Thursday, 3rd June, clarified that the Nigerian leader nor the government has anything to do with it.

It could be recalled that the House of Reps on Wednesday, 2nd June, 2021, received a proposal to consider changing Nigeria's name to the United African Republic (UAR).

Bashir Ahmad, has stated that neither the Federal government nor President Buhari submitted the change of name proposal to the House of Representatives.

Ahmad in a tweet on Thursday, June 3, stated that the request was submitted to the lower legislative chamber by an individual or a group.

Dickson101 gathered that Bashir Ahmad made the remark in reaction to reports that the President made the request.

As per him, a number of individuals had already taken it to their head, accusing the President Buhari of something he absolutely has no hand in.

House of Reps asked to change Nigeria’s name,
Adeleye Jokotoye, a tax consultant in Lagos has sent a proposal to the House of Representatives to consider changing Nigeria's name to the United African Republic.

He submitted the proposal to the House's committee on constitution review on Wednesday, June 2.

Jokotoye argued that changing the name Nigeria which was coined by Flora Shaw, the wife of Lord Lugard, will make for national unity and peace.

He went on to state that even the Bible shows that God is very much in support of name change.

Meanwhile, Senator Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker from Kaduna state, says it is not necessary to change Nigeria's name.

Nevertheless, the political activist stated that should the country decide to go for a change of name, "The Republic of SONGHAI" should be adopted.

He explained in a tweet posted on Thursday, June 3, that the ancient Songhai empire extended to parts of present Nigeria.
