Coronavirus: Lagos state Government gives fresh guideline for reopening of markets and shopping malls


The Lagos State Government has given a fresh guidelines for the reopening of markets and shopping malls within the state.

The State’s Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Dr Wale Ahmed, disclosed that all markets and shops within the State would be allowed to open from 9pm to 3pm on some selected days.

Meanwhile, Dr Wale Ahmed said that the guidelines were necessary in a statement issued by him on Saturday, 2nd May, NAN reports.

He revealed that issuance of the guidelines followed the Governor’s announcement on the gradual lifting of the lockdown in Lagos from Monday, 4th May.

Dr Wale Ahmed disclosed that every individual going to the shops and markets would be ordered to observe precautionary measures, such as high level of personal, respiratory hygiene and physical distancing.

Ahmed stated that shopping malls would also be allowed to open with the provision that they would maintain a 60% occupancy capacity at any point in time.

Furthermore, he revealed that there should be a 2-metre physical distancing between a shop owner and the next person in the store.

He stated that food handlers must at all times wear their nose masks and hand gloves in markets.

As stated by him, shop owners must ensure hand washing with soap and running water at all entry points and provide hand sanitisers.

He also disclosed that they should also ensure that nobody would be exempted from the process and conduct temperature checks on customers.

”The guidelines are proactive measures put in place by the government to curtail a possible spread of the deadly virus among traders in markets places and malls when the gradual ease of the lockdown commences on Monday,” he said.

He said that other traders and food sellers would operate on alternate days in all markets within the state.

“In essence, those trading in other items and wares apart from food will only be allowed to trade on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, while all food and farm produce sellers will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays,” Ahmed said.

In addition, he disclosed that there would be zero tolerance for all forms of street-trading, advising market association leaders to make sure that their members would comply by the rules given.

Meanwhile, he also called on the the State enforcement agencies, the Office of Iyaloja-General and the chairmen of local councils to ensure strict compliance with the orders.
