Anxiety has gripped citizens of Abia State following the interception of a group of Almajiris loaded in cattle truck on their Way to Abia on Tuesday.
Dickson blog gathered that Prince Dan Okoli, the Abia State Commissioner for Homeland Security led agents intercepted the Almajiris hidden in cattle truck at Enugu-Abia border, along the Enugu – Aba Highway.
Well, a statement released by Chief John Okiyi-Kalu, the Abia state Commissioner for Information,
elucidated that overnight, several trucks carrying food items with many almajiris obscuring in them, were turned back at the same border until the interception on Tuesday.
Okiyi-Kalu, stated that Abia state government has ordered that more homeland security agents be installed to one of the borders with Akwa Ibom State as well following the interception of another truck carrying Almajiris together with goods going to Akwa Ibom State.
However, earlier on Monday, the Abia state government alerted its citizens that it received intelligence report on the planned movement of a group of almajiris into the state within the next 24 hours.
Then, some citizens in Aba, the commercial center of the state who spoke to our reporter appealed with the state government to do the needful to strengthen the security across the state especially at the borders.
Mr Jackson Akudiwe said, “Since the news broke out, we’re all jittering because we’ve been hearing that the level of deaths in Kano state was as a result of these Almajiris.
“How come they want to shift them into our peaceful and less disturbed state? I thank God that the government uncovered this evil plot, but uncovering it is not enough. We’re also happy that they’ve apprehended some of them and that’s a wonderful achievement. We plead with them to quickly strengthen the borders
Possibly withdraw some compromising police officers and replace them with any other local security here because our policemen are too corrupt.”
Meanwhile, the commissioner disclosed that the State government has ordered that the TC Chairmen of inter-state boundary communities and traditional rulers will be held responsible and sanctioned for any of such unauthorized entry into the state.
Okiyi-Kalu asserted that the state government has cautioned that all necessary lawful measures must be taken to half the entry of the almajiris and also other unlawful migrants.
In addition, that those necessary measures will remain till the Federal Government-backed inter-state border closure guidelines put in place to contained the unfold of the novel virus from one state to another is eased.
