Mohammed Adamu, the Inspector General of Police, has announced that the training of a new police unit which will supplant the disbanded Special Anti - Robbery Squad (SARS) will kick off one week from now.
Adamu who revealed this when Davido visited him in office on Monday October 12 over the progressing #ENDSARS peaceful protests, stated that there is need to get a new structure to carry out the duties of the defunct police unit.
The IGP vowed to investigate all cases of brutality and bring perpetrators to book, while likewise revealing that the new unit will be intelligence -driven, appropriately trained and only act on special events that require their consideration.
In his words;
“We just disbanded yesterday so protesters should calm down and give us time to fix the problem. The general public will be part of the process of getting a new outfit.
“I’m talking to you so I will keep talking to many others and get civil societies involved and get their input towards the new unit.”
On the issue of compensating families of those affected by SARS brutality, the IGP said it would be addressed when investigations are concluded.
Adamu further revealed that though the officers of the disbanded SARS would be retrained and given other responsibilities in the Force, they will not be reabsorbed into the new unit.
