The Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has suspended all state activities across the across the state fot next 3 days over the reported killing of innocent peaceful protesters at the Lekki toll gate on Tuesday night, 20th October, 2020, by soldiers.
The Governor made this statement on Wednesday in a broadcast monitored by THE WHISTLER.
Well, Nigerian soldiers were said to have opened fire on the peaceful protesters who were campaigning for the #ENDSARS in across the state.
The peaceful protests, which have been going on for more than 11 days, continued on Tuesday night against the 24-hour curfew imposed on the state by the state governor.
Although, there is no official report as to the number of those killed, some accounts alleged that over 50 individuals were killed.
He regretted that: “Yesterday’s events were no doubt some of the darkest gradients of our history as a State and as a people. As you are perhaps aware, I have been engaging the #EndSARS protesters since Monday 12 and Tuesday 13 October 2020 respectively.”
Sanwo-Olu expressed that 3 of the protesters injured in the incident had been discharged, adding that additional 3 or 4 individuals would also be discharged soon.
In his side:
“In the sensitive mood, in the mood of the nation at this time, I have directed that we have an immediate suspension of all state activities for the next three days, except those that are connected with the governance of security in the state and management of the current issue.
“I have also directed that at all public buildings we can reach we should lower the flag for the next three days, as a mark of respect and solidarity for the protest.”
Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism that the nation would be better again and apologised for the unfortunate incident.
The Governor also appealed to the protesters to give peace a chance.
