The late Obafemi Awolowo’s statue iconic glasses have reportedly been removed, following the continuous looting of government and private properties across Nigeria.

The 20-feet statue of the Nigerian nationalist and statesman who played a key role in Nigeria’s independence movement, was defaced by suspected thugs who were on rampage in Lagos state.

The thugs removed the statue’s iconic glasses amid assault on a few of Nigeria’s statues of history.

The Chief Obafemi Jermiah Oyeniyi Awolowo's statue was erected during the administration of former Lagos state governor, Akinwumi Ambode, in recognition of the late nationalist’s contribution to the country’s democracy.

Well, at the time of unveiling the statue, Ambode maintained that the statue is meant to be a steady reminder of the need to value the sacrifice of our heroes and strive to uphold and promote the ideals which they stood for.

He said...

“This statue is not just about beautifying the environment or serving as a tourist attraction, but more importantly, it is meant to be a constant reminder to all of us and future generations of the need to value the sacrifice of our heroes and strive to uphold and promote the ideals which they stood for. May the labor of our heroes past never be in vain. “So, I made up my mind that I wanted to see him sit down majestically and actually looking at all of us and saying ‘Okay, after 30 years where are you?’ That is the reason why we did that because I wanted to see him sit down and not standing all the time.”

Nevertheless hoodlums have now carted away with the iconic round shaped glasses.

Meanwhile, this is coming few days after the attack on Nnamdi Azikwe monument in Anambra state.
