BRT and LBSL must carry 21 Passengers and Danfo Buses 8, more new guidelines for Lagos Transportation.


The Government of Lagos State has given new rules for the transportation operations in the state for the next 14 days.

The Lagos state government cautioned that it would, via its Committee on the abandoned vehicles, enter any workshop that fails to comply and tow the vehicles away.

Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, the Commissioner for Transportation, on giving the fresh guidelines to transporters as the partial lifts of the lockdown by the Federal Government in Lagos, Ogun, and Abuja commence on Monday, May 4th, 
disclosed that the new regulations were proactive measures put in place by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to lessen a possible unfold of the novel virus among the commuting public through transportation activities when gradual ease of the lockdown begins.

He further elucidated that effectively from Monday, May 4th, all commercial and commuter operations in Lagos state shall be between the hours of 6 am and 7 pm daily, maintaining that it is compulsory for all commuters to wear their face masks, wash their hands with soap under running water and, thereafter, use alcohol-based sanitizers before and after each trip.

However, on announcing the instant deferment of all inter-State operations and movements, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde said that the decision was taken to effectively manage and control movement within the metropolis while measuring the level of success achieved with various approach adopted by the State Government to control further spread of the novel virus.

The commissioner assert that the use of motorcycles, popularly called Okada, for commercial activities would not support the physical distancing rule as ordered by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), pointing out, therefore, that Okada operations are not allowed within Lagos State at this period.

Meanwhile, on cautioning the public transport operators against any activity capable of sabotaging government efforts at getting rid of the novel virus, the commissioner mentioned that all transport companies and operators must mandatorily and regularly disinfect their vehicles, parks and garages while they are expected to collaborate with the State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources on the standard of disinfectants approved by the State Government for use.

Furthermore, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde also cautioned all commercial passenger vehicles not to surpass 60% of their capacity at this crucial time, while physical distancing rule must be carried out both at the in the buses and at the parks, asserting that the Lagos Bus Services Ltd (LBSL) and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) must not carry more than 21 passengers, must not allow standing in their buses and should keep the air-conditioning systems switched off always.

“In the same vein, yellow buses, popularly called ‘Danfo’, must not carry more than eight passengers (two on a row), tricycles are to carry just two passengers at the back, while private car owners must also observe the physical distancing,” Oladeinde stated
